Cycling in Kortrijk (Courtrai; Belgium); an impression

People cycle more in Flanders (the Dutch speaking part of Belgium) than in Wallonia (the French speaking part). And it shows! In the town of Kortrijk in the South of Belgium (province of West-Flanders) people of all ages use their bikes for every day activities. And they do so in great numbers, even though there are no real cycling facilities like separate bicycle paths. At least you don’t see those in the center of this lovely old town.

  1. Fascinating to see this video. Just returned from an overnight stop in Kortrijk (250623) returning from a family funeral in the Netherlands. Kortrijk has changed so much. So much greener and cleaner and quieter (with only the sound of the wind) now than during your visit in 2009. Had a wonderful cycle ride along the banks of the Leie river (although the river is still very polluted). Lots of streets where the motor car is a guest. Kortrijk has undergone a sort of ‘Gent conversion’ with a much more appealing urban area with good pedestrian areas and much safer cycling with paths. I will return and stop there on my next journey to the Netherlands from Guernsey where I live. Many cities have come a long way since the domination of the fossil fuel powered vehicle. These polluting vehicles no longer darken urban buildings with their emissions. The urban areas are noticeably cleaner and fresher and more liveable. In many progressive urban areas these vehicles have been kept to the edges of the urban centre.
