Clearing the streets of snow and ice

When I mentioned the city of ’s-Hertogenbosch had forgotten to clear one new cycle route of snow in my post two weeks ago, the city quickly responded and the route was gritted right away. For the future the route is now included in the ‘to be cleared main cycle routes’. That was possible because the ‘city’ is of course a number of people working hard. Dashing through the snow…

Most of The Netherlands is covered in a blanket of snow right now, but many municipalities have been working hard to clear all that snow from the streets and cycle paths. ’s-Hertogenbosch did a good job and although it had snowed for almost 24 hours most of the main cycle routes in the city were perfectly okay to use. Snow? The Dutch roll on.

Last month the city of Bologna, capital of the Italian province of Emilia Romagna, issued a municipal ordinance in which it was also stated that cycling (and riding a moped) was to be prohibited in the case of even mild snow from 1st December to 15th March on all municipal roads and streets.
